The Egyptian historian Mostafa El-Abbadi is being celebrated with a Google Doodle. If he had lived, the Greek and Roman studies professor would be 94 years old today. The magnificent library of Alexandria was rebuilt in large part due to the efforts of Mostafa El-Abbadi.

According to a Google blog post, El-Abbadi was born in Cairo in 1928. His 22nd year saw him get a degree from the University of Alexandria with high distinction. Following that, El-Abbadi attended Cambridge University on a scholarship and pursued his education under the tutelage of renowned historians.

His job was at the Library of Alexandria when he graduated and returned to the University of Alexandria. According to Google's account, "El-Abbadi became a major expert on the topic, teaching across the globe on the Library of Alexandria."

He spoke extensively on the need of creating a contemporary version of the massive Universal Library. Over time, he was successful in gaining the backing of the Egyptian government and UNESCO for his endeavor. The Bibliotheca Alexandrina opened in 2002 after almost 15 years of planning and construction.

El-Abbadi was awarded the highest Egyptian honor, the Order of the Nile, and served as president of the Archaeological Society of Alexandria.

A "doodle" is a special image created by Google that temporarily takes the place of the company's logo on the search engine's first page. Animated shorts, games, and other interactive visual media fall within this category. Examples of such events are the anniversaries of the deaths of well-known artists or the 80th birthday of the late, great Stephen Hawking.
