Last evening, Monday, March 20, Prince Faisal bin Bandar bin Abdulaziz, Governor of Riyadh Region, attended the event of presenting the King Faisal International Award to the winners of its 45th session for the year 2023.

The ceremony began with the recitation of verses from the Holy Qur'an, followed by a speech in which Prince Turki Al-Faisal praised the memory of King Faisal bin Abdulaziz Al Saud - may God have mercy on him - and prayed to God Almighty to preserve this country under its wise leadership, the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques and his trustworthy Crown Prince - may God protect them both. Prince Turki greeted Riyadh Governor Prince Faisal bin Bandar bin Abdulaziz and the crowd.

Dr. Abdulaziz Al-Sabil, Secretary-General of the King Faisal International Prize, announced the award sections' winners. While the prize for serving Islam was shared by Professor Dr. Choi Young-Kil - Hamid of Korean nationality and His Eminence Sheikh Nasser bin Abdullah Al Zaabi of UAE nationality, whose activities were tied to philanthropic and relief work. Professor Dr. Robert Hillenbrand of the United Kingdom received the Islamic Studies Award, while Professor Abdel-Fattah Kilito of Morocco received the Prize for Arabic Language and Literature.


As for the medicine award, it was awarded jointly to Prof. Dr. Dan Hoon Buruk from the United States of America, and Prof. Dr. Sarah Catherine Gilbert from the UK, while the science award was awarded to Prof. Dr. Jackie Yi-Ro Ying, jointly with Prof. Dr. Chad Alexander Merkin from the United States of America. Prince Faisal bin Bandar bin Abdulaziz presented the prizes to the recipients and congratulated them on their accomplishment.


What is King Faisal Prize?

The King Faisal Award was created in 1977 and first presented in 1979 to people and organisations for their excellent achievements in five fields:


1/  Islamic service.

2/  Islamic research.

3/  Arabic Literature and Language.

4/  Medical.

5/  Science.


The prize seeks to expand human intellect, advance humanity, consolidate and emphasize Islamic principles, and reward science and scholars. The winners are chosen based on their scientific competence and research quality in light of precise scientific criteria overseen by various specialized committees, who are in charge of reviewing nominations, assessing the scientific output of the applicants, and finally selecting the winners.

It should be mentioned that the King Faisal Prize began accepting nominations in its forty-sixth session in 2024 and will remain available until March 31, 2023.
